New to the Gym?A Beginner's Guide to Gym Membership in North Sydney

Never joined a gym, or coming back after a long break? Here's what membership costs at Level 2, 37 Ridge Street, what your first visit looks like and what to ask before you sign.

If you've typed "beginner gym North Sydney" into Google, the exercise probably isn't what's worrying you. It's the not knowing: what it costs, what's included, whether you'll be the only beginner in the room and what actually happens when you turn up. This guide answers those questions with the real prices and sign-up steps at North Sydney Tennis & Fitness.

North Sydney Tennis & Fitness (NSTG) runs its gym in partnership with Highlow Fitness at Level 2, 37 Ridge Street, up the stairs from the public car park and close to North Sydney station. This page is for the person who hasn't signed up anywhere yet. For every plan side by side, see our gym membership in North Sydney guide. For a quick overview of everything on offer, see our North Sydney fitness and personal training page.

Start here: which of these sounds like you?

Pick one and we'll show your best first step.

Start with 3 free classes

New customers can try 3 free classes before paying anything, in a small-group format rather than on a huge anonymous gym floor. Call 0422 784 903 or use the short free-trial form. Certain restrictions apply, so ask what's included when you book.

Try a visit pass

A visit pass is a lower-risk way to test the gym before signing a weekly membership: $180 for 10 visits (expires after 3 months) or $300 for 20 visits (expires after 6 months), with no ongoing commitment.

Look at 2-for-1

2-for-1 is $29.95 per person, per week, with gym access and unlimited group fitness classes. It's priced for two people training together, so it only works if you have a real training partner.

Every weekly membership includes gym access and unlimited group fitness classes, run under the Highlow Fitness banner. From there, the plans differ mainly in tennis court-hire discounts and personal training. Weekly plans and visit passes are published with real prices rather than "contact us for pricing", which is the easiest way to judge any gym before you walk in.

How to choose in five steps

  1. Check Fitness Passport first. If your employer is enrolled, NSTG is a registered venue and you may not need to pay for a plan at all.
  2. Use the free trial before you pick anything. Three free classes are enough to tell you whether the format and timetable suit you.
  3. Decide whether you have a real training partner. 2-for-1 is priced for two people training together, not as a solo discount.
  4. Decide whether the tennis side matters. If you'll never touch a tennis court, 2-for-1 (with a training partner) or Standard covers gym and classes. Standard and Platinum add 20% off court hire, and Platinum adds personal training.
  5. Match the plan to how often you'll really come. The chart below shows the cost per visit. If your weeks are unpredictable, a visit pass avoids a weekly debit, but passes expire (3 months for 10 visits, 6 months for 20).

On these prices, two visits a week on Standard costs about the same per visit as a 10 Visit Pass, and three or more visits a week brings it well below either pass.

Next stepStill unsure? Call 0422 784 903 and talk it through with the team.

What happens on your first visit

This is the part most gym websites skip, so here's what's confirmed.

  1. Call or use the free-trial form. Use the short free-trial sign-up on the NSTG site, or call the fitness team on 0422 784 903.
  2. Take your three free classes. New customers get three free classes before paying anything. Certain restrictions apply and the site doesn't list them, so ask what's included when you book.
  3. Turn up at Level 2, 37 Ridge Street. It's up the stairs from the public car park and close to North Sydney station.
  4. Book your classes in the Highlow Fitness app. Class names, days and times aren't listed as a static timetable on our website, so classes are booked through the app (iOS and Android). The booking link is on our timetable page.
  5. Choose a plan or pass if you decide to join. Pick a weekly plan or a visit pass based on whether you'll use the tennis courts.

Next stepBook your free classes: call 0422 784 903 or use the contact page.

Fitness Passport: a shortcut if your employer offers it

If your employer is enrolled in the Fitness Passport corporate wellness scheme, NSTG is a registered venue. Eligible members get unlimited group fitness classes and Outdoor Bootcamp sessions with no joining fee. If you work in North Sydney, check with your HR or benefits team before paying for a plan you might not need, and confirm that any class or time you particularly want is covered when you register.

Next stepRegister your Fitness Passport.

Questions to ask before you sign

Some details aren't published online. Ask for them before your first debit.

Get it in writing. Joining fees and cancellation terms aren't listed online. Ask reception, and get the answers at sign-up, not after your first debit. Call the fitness team on 0422 784 903, or the proshop on (02) 9929 7172 if your question is about the tennis side.

Common mistakes first-timers make

  • Signing a weekly membership before using the free trial. Three free classes is enough to tell you if the format and timetable actually suit you.
  • Picking 2-for-1 without a real training partner. It's priced for two people training together, not as a solo discount.
  • Not asking about Fitness Passport first. If your employer offers it, you may not need to pay for a plan at all.
  • Assuming the tennis side is irrelevant. Even casual players get value from the 20% court-hire discount on Standard and Platinum.
  • Not confirming joining fees or cancellation terms before paying. These aren't listed online, so get them in writing at sign-up, not after your first debit.

One thing you might not expect: tennis is part of the deal

NSTG isn't a gym that happens to be near some tennis courts. The same site has four rooftop, sand-based synthetic grass courts and an active competitive match-play program. Standard and Platinum members get 20% off tennis court hire, and night competitions run Monday to Thursday evenings (see the competitions page). Entry fees aren't published, so enquire directly.

If you want coaching on court rather than in the gym, our adult tennis coaching and private tennis coaching are separate programs from gym membership, and our beginner tennis lessons are a good start if you're new to the sport. Our 2026 tennis and fitness gameplan shows how the two programs fit together. Got kids who want to play? Our kids tennis program runs on the same site.

Next stepBook a court or see adult tennis coaching.

Your first two weeks: a simple plan

  1. Days 1 to 3: try usClaim your 3 free classes and notice whether the format and timetable suit you.
  2. Days 4 to 7: ask your questionsAsk about joining fees, cancellation terms and Fitness Passport, and get the answers in writing.
  3. Week 2: choose and bookPick a weekly plan or a visit pass. Download the Highlow Fitness app and book your next fortnight so training is already in your calendar.
  4. End of week 2: reviewAre you turning up? If a weekly commitment still feels like too much, a visit pass lets you keep going without one.

Summary

For a first-time gym member in North Sydney, NSTG removes most of the guesswork: three free classes before you pay anything, published weekly pricing (2-for-1 at $29.95 per person, Standard at $34.95), visit passes from $180 if you're not ready for a weekly commitment, and Fitness Passport access if your employer offers it. Platinum adds personal training sessions; check the membership page for current pricing. The gym sits alongside an active tennis program, with 20% off court hire on Standard and Platinum. Joining fees, cancellation terms and any Fitness Passport limits aren't published, so confirm them before you sign up.
