Personal Training in North Sydney:One-on-One or Small Group Coaching? How to Choose

One-on-one coaching, small group classes or a mix of both at Level 2, 37 Ridge Street. Here's how the two compare, what each costs and what to do next.

Personal training and small group coaching both put a coach in front of you who watches your technique and builds your training around a goal. What differs is how much of that attention is yours alone, how often you can afford to train and how you like to work. This guide compares the two using real prices from North Sydney Tennis & Fitness, so you can choose without guessing.

We run Highlow Fitness small group classes and personal training in a private studio on Level 2 at 37 Ridge Street, up the stairs from the public car park and alongside our four synthetic grass tennis courts. If you are still deciding on the gym itself, start with our North Sydney gym membership guide, then come back here to decide how you want to be coached. For a quick overview of everything on offer, see our North Sydney fitness and personal training page.

Either format can cover the strength guideline. The Australian Government's physical activity guidelines for adults recommend muscle-strengthening activities on at least 2 days a week and breaking up long periods of sitting. A coached strength session twice a week covers the first part, and a lunchtime class helps with the second. If you're unsure whether a new exercise program suits you, check with a health professional first.

How to choose in five steps

  1. Name your main goal. A specific target, such as learning to squat, bench press and deadlift safely or returning to training after a break, points towards one-on-one coaching. A broader goal, such as getting fitter and more consistent, suits classes well.
  2. Be honest about how you work best. Some people need a coach's full attention to feel confident. Others train harder with people around them. If you can't tell, try a class first.
  3. Count the sessions you'll really attend. The chart below shows the cost per session. If you'll train three or more times a week, a weekly membership is usually the better value. If your week is unpredictable, a visit pass or a few booked coaching sessions keeps things flexible.
  4. Check the trainer and the screening. Use the checklist further down this page, and ask us the same questions.
  5. Try before you commit. New customers can take 3 free classes. For one-on-one coaching, ask for a quote and what a first session involves.

How to check any personal trainer before you sign

Whoever you choose, a few checks are worth ten minutes. The Victorian Government's Better Health Channel guide, produced with AUSactive, says registered personal trainers hold a Certificate IV in Fitness, a Diploma of Fitness or a degree in exercise science or human movement, and suggests you ask to see proof. You can also look a trainer up in the AUSactive directory. Ask us these same questions before you book.

Warning signs to walk away from. The same guide lists trainers who skip health screening, can't show credentials or references, push you to sign a contract in your first session, insist on supplements, or give everyone the same program.

Before any new program, especially after a long break or if you have a medical condition, the Adult Pre-Exercise Screening System is the standard Australian check. It was developed by AUSactive, Exercise and Sports Science Australia and Sports Medicine Australia, and it may point you to your GP first. Fitness Passport members here complete a pre-exercise screening form before their first session.

Common mistakes when choosing personal training in North Sydney

  • Assuming one-on-one is always better. It shines when you have a specific goal or need. For building a routine, a coached class you'll attend three times a week can suit you better than a single session you can only afford occasionally.
  • Choosing on price per session alone. Compare what's included, such as the program, nutrition plan, body scans and how many people the coach is watching.
  • Skipping the credentials check. Ask for proof of qualifications, first aid and insurance, from any provider.
  • Signing before you've trained there. New customers get 3 free classes. Pressure to sign a contract in the first session is a warning sign.
  • Ignoring screening and your GP. If you've had a long break, an injury or a medical condition, get advice before you start.
  • Expecting two sessions a week to do everything. Guidelines recommend being active on most days and strengthening muscles on at least 2. Coached sessions anchor your week, but the rest of it counts too.

Beyond the gym: keep your tennis in the mix

Standard and Platinum memberships include 20% off tennis court hire, and tennis counts as real exercise, as our post on the health benefits of playing tennis explains. If you want coaching on court rather than in the gym, our adult tennis coaching and private tennis coaching are separate programs from gym personal training. Our 2026 tennis and fitness gameplan shows how the two fit together.

Your first four weeks: a simple plan

  1. Days 1 to 3: try usClaim your 3 free classes and notice how the coaching feels. Bring the checklist questions with you.
  2. Days 4 to 7: talk optionsCall 0422 784 903 for a personal training quote, or ask for the next 6 Week Challenge start date. Complete any health screening you're asked for.
  3. Week 2: choose and bookPick a membership, visit pass, personal training pack or a mix. Download the Highlow Fitness app and book your next fortnight so training is already in your calendar.
  4. Weeks 3 and 4: reviewAre you turning up, and does the coaching suit you? The Better Health Channel says some improvement is realistic after about six weeks, so judge by consistency rather than the mirror.

Summary

Personal training suits a specific goal and individual attention. Small group coaching suits building a routine, a lower cost per session and the push of a group, and you can use both. At North Sydney Tennis & Fitness you can start with 3 free classes, train in coached classes from $29.95 a week, book a 10 Week Personal Training Pack for $599.95, or combine the two through Platinum or the 6 Week Challenge. Fitness Passport covers classes if your employer offers it, and personal training doesn't need a membership.

FAQ

What's the difference between personal training and small group training?

Personal training is one-on-one coaching (or several sessions a week, or online programming) with a program built around your goals, and it doesn't need a membership. Small group coaching is a coach-led class where smaller numbers allow real-time technique correction, accessed through a membership, visit pass or Fitness Passport. You can use both.

Do I need a gym membership to do personal training?

No. You pay only for the coaching sessions you book. Ask about the 10 Week Personal Training Pack or a quote for a different setup.

How much does personal training cost here?

The 10 Week Personal Training Pack is $599.95 and includes two sessions a week, a personalised 10-week program, a nutrition plan and before-and-after Evolt body scans. Other setups, such as a single weekly session or online programming, are quoted individually: call 0422 784 903. Platinum membership includes 30-minute personal training sessions; see the membership page for current pricing.

Can I combine personal training with group classes?

Yes. Platinum includes personal training sessions alongside unlimited classes, the 6 Week Challenge includes one personal training session, and personal training can also be booked on its own with no membership needed.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes. Classes are coached in small groups with modifications for all fitness levels, and coaches can make exercises easier or harder within the same class. The 6 Week Challenge is also designed for all levels and starts with a one-on-one goal-setting session with a coach.

Does Fitness Passport cover personal training?

Fitness Passport gives you unlimited group fitness classes and Outdoor Bootcamp here, with no joining fee and no ongoing fees on top of your workplace benefit. Personal training doesn't require a membership, and you pay only for the coaching sessions you book. Register your Fitness Passport.

What qualifications should a personal trainer have in Australia?

The Better Health Channel says registered personal trainers have completed a Certificate IV in Fitness, a Diploma of Fitness or a degree in exercise science or human movement, and should be registered with a recognised industry body such as AUSactive. Ask any trainer for proof of qualifications, first aid and insurance, and ask our team the same questions before you book.

How long before I see results?

It varies with your age, exercise history and the activities you do. The Better Health Channel suggests some improvement is realistic after about six weeks. Our 6 Week Challenge is built around a block of that length.

Can I try before I commit?

New customers can try 3 free classes (certain restrictions apply). For one-on-one coaching, call 0422 784 903 or use our contact page to ask for a quote and what a first session involves.
